Former Team Doctor Continues to Inspire Athletic Trainers

Spring 2018 Issue

Head Athletic Trainer Michael Keeney has literally seen it all in the Susquehanna University athletic training room. Over more than 20 years, he has treated nearly every conceivable injury and at the same time has assisted every student-athlete who has worn the Orange and Maroon since his arrival in 1995.

When asked about his role here at Susquehanna, Keeney quickly refers to someone who inspired him—and literally hundreds of other athletic trainers—to remain in the career for such a long period of time. That person is Dr. Michael Cordis ’63.

“He has given his entire career to make the field of athletic training more successful, and has trained and inspired so many to get into the field and to stay in the field,” Keeney says. “Susquehanna was lucky to have him as a team doctor for such a long time.”

Cordis started working with student-athletes at Susquehanna in 1976 and served as medical director and team physician for more than 20 years before retiring from the roles in 1989. He went on to work with several professional organizations and schools across Pennsylvania and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Fame in 2003.

Cordis continues to teach and train those seeking a career in the field and regularly speaks about ongoing research in the areas of concussion management
